11A01 Triboemission and Boundary Film Formation Dr. Thomas Reddyhoff(UK) N/A Summary
Triboemission is the emission of photons, electrons and other charged particles that arise from a sliding contact. Little is known about this phenomenon, despite its possibly crucial role in the formation of boundary films and in the degradation of lubricants. To address this, our TTRF sponsored project developed a new measurement system to spatially map triboemission. The system comprises a simulated asperity contact, located close to a microchannel plate and phosphor screen within a high vacuum. This enabled spatially resolved triboemission images to be obtained for the first time. These are beginning to explain how emission mechanisms occur and also reveal previously unobserved phenomena. Furthermore, close correlation between emission maps and SEM images of surface damage highlights how this approach can be used to monitor wear processes in great detail.
Fluorescence microscopy and UV stimulated emission technique are now being developed to investigate the effects of triboemission on lubricants.

Planned publications:
Currently a further paper is in preparation to be submitted to Tribology Letters.
It should also be noted that much of the time of this project to date, has been spent developing the equipment. Now that this has been achieved, we expect to make numerous papers and presentations over the coming years. We will acknowledge TTRF in these and will keep TTRF informed of progress.
